USERNAME EMAIL Defualt for Registration, Get Rid of USERNAME field

I have got to be missing something. Searched for a solution button/code/file but have not found one. Don't really know why a username is needed during registration when it should default to the email anyway. Too much potential client hassle when its not needed. Any thoughts (and crack at the code if needed) would be appreciated!
