Version 5.5.2.1 - Cannot edit site while "maintenance mode" is enabled.

I just installed Concrete5 version 5.5.2.1 (new install not an upgrade). I logged into my new site as Admin and from the dashboard I enabled maintenance mode so I could keep it private while editing my new site. When I clicked on "Return to website" I received the following screen...

"Coming Back Soon This site is currently down for maintenance."

From there on out I could not do anything.
I was able to go to "site.com/index.php/dashboard" and log back in, but still can not edit the site while maintenance mode is enabled. I'm able to disable maintenance mode to get my site back up for editing but, the whole point to enabling maintenance mode is so you can work on your web site and not allow any access to it while you are making changes. Or I'm I wrong about this?

I installed Concrete5 through the cPanel of my Hosting Company using Simple Scripts and received no errors during the install.
I have not made any changes to any settings in the Dashboard nor any of the web pages, everything is still at the defaults of a new install.

Please Advise!

Thank you!

Take your site out of maintenance mode. Go to your dashboard, and click "system & settings". Click "site access" and than under viewing permissions click "private- only the administrator group etc etc"

This will make the site private, while maintenance mode is more for cleaning up your server from ftp.

Yeah but it asks the visitor to log in. Not perfect sense to me?

I have been having this problem too and got round it by creating an index.html file with a 'site is currently being updated' message. Once uploaded to the root folder visitors are taken to that page rather than index.php by default. It means you can log in via domain.co.uk/index.php and work on the site without vistors seeing the registration page (which I don't think is a particularly appealing solution)

You need to use the sitemap to navigate back to the home page once you are using the site; using the menu nav of your site to access the home page will take you to the index.html page. There was an excellent add called maintenance editor but it is not currently supported by the most recent version of C5.

You have probably found a solution anyway by now but I thought I would share what I tried : )
