What does this error screen mean?

Sometimes when I edit a content block, an error screen pops up. It simply says "Error." This happens in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. In Internet Explorer 7, the grinder simply spins forever.
From that point on, that content block cannot be edited. If I copy the block and paste it on a different page, the same thing happens with the copy.
If I copy the text itself, and paste that text into another content block, that block is ruined as well.
I have carefully examined the text in the content block, in the HTML view. There are no strange elements.
