Workflow questions "Pending Approval"

I've got a workflow setup with 2 groups.
Group1 has users who can create and edit content, and submit to WorkFlow.
Group2 has the ability to review and approve submissions by anyone in Group1.
THE PROBLEM:
When a user EDITS the page and submits to workflow, and the APPROVER decides to CANCEL the submission, a notice reading "This page is pending approval" remains on the screen for the editor.
I can't seem to find a way to prevent this from showing up.
If the approver has cancelled the request, why would the editor still see "This page is pending approval" on the page?

cleared browser cache.
tried incognito.
everything else works as it should.
